Overview |

The WDM Lite
(TM) Optical
Return Loss Meter Adapter is the industry's first ORL adapter of its kind. This completely passive
and rugged field unit allows technicians to measure
the optical return loss (ORL) of an optical fiber.
This unit can also be used to measure the ORL of
a WDM or DWDM fiber or channel.
The ORL Adapter allows a standard
optical power meter and source to be used to measure
the optical return loss (ORL) in a fiber. The test
set connects to its appropriate ports on the adapter,
and the fiber to be tested connects to the Fiber
Under Test (FUT) port of the ORL Meter Adapter. |

| The fiber optical
return loss is
calculated using the
below formula from the
readings that are
recorded on the power
meter. [ORL]dB
= [Optical Source]dBm - [Optical Power Meter]dBm
- 1 dB
For measuring absolute ORL or ORL in a WDM/DWDM
channel, the laser transmitter of the communication
system is used as the Optical Source. The Absolute
Returned Optical Power is calculated as:
[Absolute
Returned Optical Power]dBm = [Optical Power Meter]dBm
+ 1 dB
DWDM/WDM ORL is:
[WDM ORL]dB
= [Optical Power of DWDM Laser]dBm - [Optical Power
Meter]dBm - 1 dB
